Siti held a concert recently at Royal Albert Hall to a "near capacity"
crowd of 2,500. Impressive claim, but according to wikipedia, the RAH
can hold more people than that - 8000 to be exact. Oh well, I suppose
it's not really a false statement if you close off 2/3 of the arena.
What is it with Malaysians and the RAH anyway? In the late 80s, we
made such a big deal when Sudirman performed there during the Salem
Music Festival. In stark comparison, the London papers didn't even
mention the event. the fact that it was sponsored by a ciggie company
and featured only Asian singers probably had something to do with it.
In the UK, the RAH is old hat. It's too small for mainstream pop /
rock stars and too stodgy for indie acts. Where classical
entertainment is concerned, there are better and newer purpose-built
arenas for opera, ballet and classical music.
So who does the RAH serve nowadays? Asians who still think that's it's
the greatest and classiest venue in the world. Anyway, I shouldn't
take anything away from Siti's show that night, which by all accounts
was marvellous. The nearly all-Malaysian crowd loved every second of
it, it was reported.
