Surfer Girl pauses under the iconic Scripps Pier

The original 1,000 foot long wooden pier was built at fledgling Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1916 with funding from benefactor Ellen Browning Scripps. It was destroyed in 1983 by an El Niño powered storm. The current modern pier was built/finished in 1988. Today it’s considered one of the world’s largest research piers.
