This is not a rare orchid, but neither is it that common, at least, in this area. In the words of an early naturalist:
"We shall never forget the moment when our eyes first fell on its blossom in the lonely depths of a sphagnum bog. The feeling was irresistible that we had surprised some strange, sentient creature in its secret bower of moss; that it was alert and listening intently with pricked-up ears."
