El pintor y escultor Jean Dubuffet, representante fundamental de las búsquedas "matemáticas" posteriores a la segunda guerra mundial y teórico del art brut, crea una obra inclasificable. Con su serie "legendes", de la que forma parte "La gigue irlandaise", el artista amplia a los personajes el tratamiento que hasta entonces reservaba a los objetos: la reducción a "una especie de magma multicolor" (Dubuffet). Aquí las figuras se transforman en una serie de alvéolos coloreados, presa de un temblor generalizado que hace pensar en una danza endiablada. La obra anuncia el ciclo "L´Hourloupe", puzzle de personajes y objetos rayados, que iniciará al año siguiente.
