Close encounter between a King and a Queen

Explore #23 - February 19, 2024

EPOD #8 - April 17, 2024

This photo shows the Moon and Jupiter at the conjunction of January 18, 2024. Jupiter is the bright dot in the lower right corner and if you enlarge the image you can also distinguish its four main satellites, the so-called ” galileian satellites” because discovered by Galileo Galilei. It is usually impossible to photograph Jupiter with its satellites and, with the same shot, the details of the Moon, because of the great difference in brightness. In this photo, however , this was possible thanks to the clouds that have partially obscured the Moon, making comparable exposure time.

The colouration of the clouds around the Moon is the so called “ lunar crown”, a phenomenon generated by the refraction of light passing through the water droplets of clouds.
