The Milky Way over the Etna

DESCRIPTION:

The photo shows the Milky Way at the sunset, viewed from the Bove Valley ( Etna ), during an eruption.

The framed part of the Milky Way is that of the “summer triangle”. The bright star to the left of the crater in the centre ( the Sud Est Crater ) is Vega, while on the top are visible the nebulae surrounding gamma cigni.

The heightened brighteness of the sky on the left hand side of the photo is caused by the light pollution of the nearby city of Catania.

The image is a composition of two photographs taken the same night and in the same location.

The first one is the average of 6 static photos of the landscape, taken with a Nikon lens of 50mm of focal length.

The second one is an average of 9 photos taken with a Nikon lens of 35mm of focal length.
