Brown bear ( Ours brun )

The brown bear is present on the Asian, American and European continents. Until the beginning of the 19th century, it was also present in North Africa. Its size varies according to its location. The largest, the grizzly and the Kodiak bear are found in the USA. In France, it is much smaller than its American cousins.

The embryo does not develop immediately after the mating of the parents. There is a period of 5 months between fertilization and the beginning of its development. This is to allow the young to be born not during but at the end of the winter.

On a global scale, the brown bear is not threatened but some small populations are more vulnerable than others. In France, once present in all mountain ranges, the bear now only occupies the Pyrenees. There are about twenty of them.
