One of the last three-masted wooden sailing ships to be built in the shipyards of Dundee, Scotland, it served as a specialist research vessel carrying Robert Falcon Scott and Earnest Shackleton on their first, and highly successful, journey to the Antarctic, known as the Discovery Expedition (1901-1903). It remained a research vessel until 1931, apart from a short period of service as a merchant ship before and during the First World War. Following her final voyage, Discovery was moored in London as a static training ship and visitor attraction until 1979. In 1986 she was returned to Dundee under the care of the Maritime Trust, and subsequently taken into the ownership of the Dundee Heritage Trust. The legendary ship is berthed in a custom-built dock as the centrepiece of Dundee's visitor attraction Discovery Point.
