Brahminy Kite

Daintree River, FNQ

I was stoked to see a brand new bird of prey on my recent FNQ trip - the Brahminy Kite (formerly known as the Red-backed Sea-eagle). Its diet consists of a lot of fish, some insects, and it happily feasts on carrion. My first glimpse of one was on the highway where I nearly ran it over as it was enjoying some roadkill. I'm very glad I didn't, but we sure gave each other a damn good scare. My first photo op came shortly after. The chestnut brown body of this raptor was stunning to see up-close, and I snapped this pic from a boat as it was taking in the sunset from a perch on the Daintree River.
