Mallard, National Railway Museum
The Mallard is a steam locomotive built in Doncaster in 1938 for the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) and designed by Sir Nigel Gresley who was chief engineer at the LNER.
The Mallard was part of the A4 class of locomotives which were streamlined and wind tunnel tested so that they could run at high speeds of over 120 mph.
Mallard holds the world speed record for steam locomotives at 126 mph which it achieved on 3rd July 1938. It retired in 1963.
