Clavius Tycho Sunrise

The rim of the huge crater Clavius straddles the terminator near the Moon's south pole. Nearby the floor of the prominent crater Tycho appears half in light half in darkness. This image was created via eyepiece projection through a 25 centimeter reflecting telescope.

The inset reduces resolution of the same image to simulate the view through 10x50mm binoculars. This magnification and sun angle eight days after new moon gave Tycho the striking appearance of a crater within a crater--an illusion that disappears at greater resolution.
