Blooming Fortress
A Common Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus gracious) clings to a vertical stucco wall, ready to take cover behind a blooming Claretcup Cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus) if I get too close. I've welcomed sagebrush lizards to the garden by placing plenty of loose stone, which provides hiding places from predators, such as jays and roadrunners, that live in the neighborhood. The claretcup, the oldest and largest of several in my garden, blooms every April. It is a variety of hedgehog cactus.
