Begin Again (1)

“Are you going to spend all this time on your phone?”

“Look who’s talking.”

“It’s my job.”

“Well, I’m doing my job too.”

“You said you’d take time off for this.”

“I did. But people depend on me. Fine! See, I’m putting it away.”

“Do we really have nothing to say to each other? After all these years?”

“Maybe we’ve said everything there was to say. Maybe that’s why we’re here.”

“Maybe. When are we supposed to come back inside?”

“In ten minutes. I set the alarm.”

“Right … I looked up the judge. He looks like professor Queitch, remember him?”

“How could I ever forget. I slept through so many of his lectures and missed the rest. Do you remember his second one?”

“I remember what happened right before. When this gorgeous girl walked up to me and said ‘Wanna skip?’ I’d never skipped a class before.”

“Yet you said ‘Lead the way’.”

“You were such a rebel and I was a goody two shoes. I couldn’t believe you spoke to me. I couldn’t pass up a chance like that.”

“We skipped a lot of lectures, didn’t we? I led you down the bad path.”

“I’m not complaining. Seems like ages ago, doesn’t it? In another life. What happened to us?”

“Life, I guess. Still, we’re on better terms than most divorcing couples.”

“But is this a good thing? The opposite of love is indifference, not hate. We’re divorcing in a few minutes, on Valentine’s Day no less, and – nothing. Absolutely nothing.”

“Would you prefer we fought?”

“I don’t know. I just don’t understand how it happened. There was a time when one look into your eyes made me forget my name. And now we don’t look at each other, we don’t talk. We have less contact than we’ve had living on opposite sides of campus. And we live together!”

“I don’t know either. But it’s not like we took this decision lightly. We did the work: we tried therapy, establishing rules, vacations. I guess it’s just over.”

“Aren’t you sad?”

“Of course, I’m sad.”

“You don’t look like it.”
