French author, caricaturist, and photographer Nadar who is recalled fundamentally for his photographic representations, which are viewed as among the best done in the nineteenth century. He would have his subjects sit for him which permitted him to sharpen his skill for perception, bringing about cleverly precise depictions that appeared to nail their character qualities. His interest for those he portrayed would demonstrate priceless when he went to photography in 1854, having first introduced his artist brother Adrien in the profession. I took his work and made it my own while as well using some of his stylistic qualities. I was able to photograph one of my friends and I was first going to have her use one of Nadar’s stylistic qualities which is showing the hiding of their hands, but instead I wanted to focus more on her emphasizing facial features. Back then, most picture studios were utilizing foundation and a ton of extras and zeroing in on how individuals were dressed. Rather, Nadar was zeroing in on the face and utilizing a plain foundation to attempt to explain the character of the individuals. With that being said, I did a close up on my friends face which showed a bit of a smirk. I had a plain background behind her and did not include any props, which Nadar did not use all the time. I positioned my friend by a wall near a window that gave natural lighting coming through. I did not have to edit the lighting in any way for the picture. I used that natural lighting, in order to bring her out from the background and give her face a glowing quality. I made sure to focus on the photo being simple and direct since that is what Nadar’s basis of his photos were.
