Lotus Sutra (Miaofa lianhua jing), Volume 2
This illustrated manuscript of the Lotus Sutra (Miaofa lianhua jing), Volume 2 was crafted by an unknown artist during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) sometime around 1340. The manuscript is bound as an accordion-fold book with; gold and silver on indigo-dyed mulberry paper, which creates its striking appearance. The practice of producing such lavish works of Buddhist sutras was one that many other cultures also took part in. This item was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art using the Lila Acheson Wallace Gift in 1994. The accession number is 1994.207.
