Celestial Dancer (Devata)- 2015.500.4.14

This is Celestial Dancer (Devata); the artist is unknown, but the sculpture is from Central India and was made in the 11th century (Chandela period). It is made from sandstone and stands 34 inches high. There are a multitude of photos of this piece shown at different angles on the website- each impressive in its own way. The details are beautifully done, and are idealized to the aesthetic of the time period. This sculpture would have adorned a temple. It is now on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art as a gift of Florence and Herbert Irving; accession number 2015.500.414.
