A closer-in view of the same ediface as shown a few shots earlier:

Since the original posting of that image, a friend has identified the building as a well-known pub, The Pinnacle, in the Melbourne suburb Fitzroy. (Despite my father having grown up nearby, I am not very familiar with the area.)
The building was erected in 1886-87, still in the afterglow pomp of the gold rush era. Prior to becoming a pub, the building had many uses, including a very early telephone bureau.
The owners have not acknowledged the changed "head that wears the [British] crown"...
