Home from an Odyssey

I have just returned home after a holiday, visiting Greece and Italy for the first time in my life. It is a visual shock to see again the very different architecture from what my eyes quickly got used to in the largest Mediterranean cities I stayed in -- Athens and Rome.

 

Today, Melbourne and Athens each have about five and a half million people. But when Greece was finally freed of Ottoman rule in 1830, Athens was tiny. Melbourne was founded in 1835, just five years later. So it is not just a question of age in the case of those two cities at least...
