The brick building in the centre of this image was Melbourne's first (Anglican) cathedral, consecrated in 1848. It is one of very few CBD buildings that predate the Victorian gold rush, although it is not in its original location or orientation, and it is essentially only the exterior that has survived, with some modifications that include a reduction of the tower.
