Beethoven and the Blues

The main hall of the Melbourne Recital Centre, filling up prior to a Beethoven concert by the acclaimed English Pianist Paul Lewis.

For many years Melbourne's music lovers lamented the lack of a small concert hall with acoustics suitable for music on a scale more intimate than symphonic. In 2009 they finally got one. Although the demands of chamber music were the primary target, the hall is used for a wide variety of music genres.

Even before the planning stage, architects and theatre acoustics teams were sent overseas to study famous exemplars such as the Wiener Musikverein and London's Wigmore Hall. It was concluded that ornamental bling contributed to the pleasing sound heard in such places, and modern equivalents were contrived in the Queensland Hoop Pine panelling and various fittings. Concrete surrounds and supporting steel springs isolate the building from the rumbles of trams trundling through the busy streets outside.
