The Soft Pedal

pp

Predominantly against daylight from window facing, slightly offset to left, but with secondary contribution from ceiling down-lights within room.

PS As per comments, this photo especially accords with Henri-Cartier Bresson’s claim that photographs are not taken, but made. The image was first an idea. Next day, its feasibility was tested by sticking an iPhone through the piano’s legs and snapshotting the pedals and the rug against the light. Then during capture the day after that, I did things like asking the foot owner to raise her heel.

For all the forethought and directing, the results were a bit disappointing. I’d missed the strongest light and various factors did not flatter the lovely feet. A wide aperture prime on a film SLR would have given more of the desired bokeh.

But still, some parts of the overall expectations were satisfied, and, in terms of colour and even the light, perhaps surpassed. The rest has become more abstract and painterly.

After making an imperfect recording, the famous pianist Artur Schnabel said something like, "I could make it better -- but it wouldn't be as good!" So I won't repeat it -- I've tried to salvage something of the original inspiration, and after all, "…a man's reach should exceed his grasp..."

Rug is antique Farahan, over 100 years old, wool with all natural dyes.
