Bluestone and Poppy Memorial to Air Crew Lost During WWII
At The Crags, west of Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia, a memorial to an air crew that disappeared during WWII (six months before the photographer was born).
On the horizon to the west (right) of the monument, the island they attempted to land on can be seen, though more than half is hidden. It is notably flat-topped, and a landing looks feasible. Sufficient zooming reveals a poppy and these words:
This plaque was erected by the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East, in memory of the four Royal Australian Airforce personnel who lost their lives when their plane lost contact with its base in Mount Gambier on February fifteenth 1944. For reasons unknown, they tried to land their plane, an Avro Anson, on Lady Julia Percy Island south of this piece of land. The plane is believed to have been on submarine surveillance at the time...
