Williamstown Dusk

Again, iPhone re-photograph of old b&w print from Kodak Plus X negative. Sad not to have the negative -- this was my first 'real' photograph. Hand-held, wide open, but original superior.

Much is said about Oly 35SP 42mm focal length giving human eyeful, and sin of cropping. But the eye has feeble acuity away from small sharp central zone. It scans, and the brain zooms and crops according to interest.

Not to crop this picture would re-inject what the brain rejects, and give the lie to the way this low-lying Melbourne bayside spot presents itself -- wide thin strip of lambent water, volcano remnants merged with the sky an infinity away, everything peaceful. Image needs to subtend same angle as original scene to have any chance of impact.

Light tracking app suggest this was shot around August, end of Melbourne winter (49 years ago at upload). Like the people, the trees have gone and been replaced by others. (The latter lean away from the prevailing winds; eventually, they lean right over.) The playground items have also gone, replaced by safer and more boring ones in a less poetic spot. Ah yes, "nostalgia ain't what it used to be..."
