Medicine Master Buddha-1100s

This master Buddha statue is on display at the Cleveland Museum of Art in section 235B Japanese. Made in the Heian period from gilded wood and stands at 145.4 cm (57 1/4 in.). This statue of Buddha is making a hand gesture that represents "have no fear". This beautiful piece is made from hollowed out wooden pieces covered in gilding and would have been the main image in a Buddhist temple hall. It is said that he was made to cure all diseases including ignorance. His left hand used to hold a medicine jar while the right hand represents safety or reassurance. The statue sits on a lotus pedestal protected by the 12 divine generals in this culture. Made by artist Takako Setsu given to the Museum in 1973. An incredible and meaningful sculpture to the people of Japan. www.clevelandart.org/art/1973.85
