Into the Crater, Haleakalā Hawaii, 2020

I really like this pic but it was from several years ago and I could only find and edit it as a jpg in Cap One, so I might have rendered it differently if I could have found the raw file. I am more organized now.

In spite of the title, this is not a crater (although there are a few little recent ones in the middle) nor is it a caldera. Rather it is mainly an erosional feature caused by drainage canyons eating their way uphill and finally merging on the summit. The summit where we are is 10,023 feet, and the volcano last erupted only about 350 years ago, so its still active, geologically speaking.
