I can't think about 20163 without thinking about 20170. They were vac braked only & paired up together in the summer of 1985 & they dominated the Burton/Derby - Skeg trains that summer timetable, just like 20160 & 20180 had dominated those trains the summer before. They were still in banger blue then & the call to Derby Works came for 20163 in October 1985 for a general overhaul, dual braking & a repaint into the then new Railfreight livery. By the time its next overhaul was due Class 60s were coming on stream & replacing the Class 20s, so time was up for 20163 & many many more classmates. Toton depot was littered with withdrawn Class 20s around this time.
