Evacuees will be given a "substitute" (kind of coffee) at Riihimäki station. In June 1944, when the Soviet Union began its major offensive on the Karelian Isthmus, a large number of Finnish civilians fled to the evacuation center. About 430,000 Finns were moved from their home regions in East and North Karelia and the Salla-Kuusamo region. Those who left for evacuation were mainly resettled elsewhere in Finland, and temporary accommodation and other living conditions were arranged for them in the final stages of the war.
