The pincer movement of two army corps liberated Vyborg in August 1941, but the damage to the city severely dampened the atmosphere of the actual victory.
In the photo, Linnansilta land supports exploded while Finnish troops were preparing for the occupation parade, which took place on August 31, 1941.
The retreating Red Army had set off plenty of explosive charges in the city.
Of the buildings behind, at least the decorative one on the left still exists. Today, it probably houses the Viipur Pedagogical College.
Finns lost Vyborg again in 1944, and life there did not have time to normalize between 1941-44.
SA photo # 40763 by Leminen. Date unknown, but the end of Aug. 1941.
