The southern Ara Moai. Rapa Nui
The so-called Ara Moai or moai roads are lined with recumbent moai, believed by many to have been abandoned in transit from the Rano Raraku statue quarry to ahu, on which many moai were set up—hence the name Ara Moai. Research by the UCL Institute of Archaeology Rapa Nui Landscapes of Construction Project has challenged this interpretation, suggesting instead that the moai along them comprised deliberate moai alignments. This photo shows the suggested line of the Ara just inland of Ahu Hanga Tetenga.
