Stone adze from Pitcairn Island
Ceremonial stone adze in the Pitt-Rivers Museum. Acquired in the late 19th-century, this ceremonial/ non-functional stone adze is from Pitcairn Island, famous for its association with the Bounty Mutineers, but years prior to their arrival, briefly occupied by Polynesian voyagers, who established a stone quarry there, tools from which have been found on islands—such as Mangareva— hundreds of miles away.
