One of the reasons to arrive early at Cataloochee Valley is simple. It's a hotbed of activity when people aren't there. Now, the park itself is only open from Sunrise to Sunset... however you're allowed to be there to photograph the sunrise and sunset. Take that as you will, and follow the park rules as best you can. On our way out of the Valley the first time I spotted this little guy on the very edge of the forest foraging berries, and anything else he could get at. I hoped out of the car [I was in the passenger seat] and setup my camera, about 150ish yards from the bear, so this is cropped in quite a bit. He glanced over for a moment, but went along his way. As a Juvenile they begin to wander further and further away from their mothers, though don't for an instant forget she is closer than you expect. I purposefully kept the truck between myself and the cub here, not because I was worried about being attacked, but because there is always a chance that it could happen. Stay safe out there friends!
