Jack's Shop

Once a sleepy little blacksmith's property and shop, this was the scene of a cavalry skirmish during the Civil War. The battle was undecided after Confederate troops, attacked by Union soldiers on both front and rear lines, managed to escape. This particular battle brought an end to the Gettysburg Campaign in which Confederate General Lee tried to end the war decisively by forging into Pennsylvania. Instead, his army was defeated at Gettysburg and pushed back into Virginia. The war continued for two more years on southern soil.

The Campaign's combined casualties numbered more than 51,000 troops. The entire Civil War casualties are estimated at 620,000 - equal to the total of "American fatalities in the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, combined."

Today this is a beautiful, serene scene. You would think that all of humanity would have learned to value that by now.
