Clan Line

Steam locomotive No 35028 rockets through Overton, Hampshire Station today, the 4th December 2024 with the Sherbourne Christmas Carol, London Victoria to Yeovil Junction special. Clan Line is a 4-6-2 Merchant Navy Class locomotive designed by Oliver Bullied, built in 1948 at Eastleigh Works. The locomotive was originally built with an air-smoothed casing but extensively rebuilt in 1959 and the casing removed.

I was reasonably fortunate with this photo, the light levels were poor on an overcast day, but lots of steam as the engine is running hard because at the end of the train is a class 47 diesel being dragged along dead being the support engine 47848.

I was slightly out with my timings and a microsecond later would have resulted in a slightly closer image but I can't complain.

Back in the 1960s this loco was unofficially timed at speeds over 100mph. So in relative terms it was at a canter when it passed through Overton on the way to Salisbury.
