In de stille Kempen...
Door gebrek aan tijd zal het nog wel een jaar of twintig duren vooraleer ik al mijn oude Belgische foto’s op mijn website heb staan. Het voordeel van Flickr is dan weer dat er niet noodzakelijk samenhang moet zijn tussen de foto’s. Ideaal dus om de oude doos nu en dan eens open te trekken 😉
Tot begin 2000 was België een waar dieselmekka waar de NMBS alles bij mekaar maar liefst 17 (sub)reeksen diesellocomotieven in dienst had. De grootste serie was de reeks 62-63 die oorspronkelijk 136 exemplaren telde. Ze waren zo alomvertegenwoordigd dat het bizar aanvoelde om er specifiek op te gaan jagen. Het traject van Mol naar Hasselt werkte dan weer wél inspirerend: de landschappen boden de nodige afwisseling, er waren de pas gesloten mijnen en het Kamp van Beverlo kende regelmatig militair vervoer.
25 juni 1999 zou uiteindelijk een erg spectaculaire dag worden met een scholingsrit van de 1.002, enkele militaire treinen en daar bovenop het normale goederenverkeer. De dag startte echter in alle rust in Balen aan deze brug over het kanaal Dessel – Kwaadmechelen. Nu ja, behalve dan dat die rust even werd verstoord toen de 6291 met een L-trein naar Hasselt passeerde.

Until the early 2000s, Belgium was a veritable diesel Mecca where the SNCB had no less than 17 (sub)series of diesel locomotives in service. The largest serie was the 62-63 series, which originally counted 136 locomotives. They were so ubiquitous that it felt bizarre to hunt them down specifically. Even then, the route from Mol to Hasselt had quite some photographic potential: the landscapes offered the necessary variety, there were the recently closed mines and the Kamp van Beverlo saw regular military transport.
25 June 1999 would end up being a very spectacular day with a training ride of steam engine 1.002, some military trains and on top of that the normal goods traffic. However, the day started quietly in Balen at this bridge over the Dessel - Kwaadmechelen canal. Well, except that that peace was briefly disturbed when the 6291 passed with an L train to Hasselt.
