Class 37 37003 - Original Dutch livery (1992)

Class 37/0 37003 poses in its newly applied 'Dutch' livery during 1992. Unfortunately no location for this one.

Originally numbered D6704, 37003 was the fourth Class 37 (English Electric Type 3) to roll off the production line at the Vulcan Foundry, Newton-le-Willows, and entered service a month behind pioneer D6700 in December 1960. From new it was allocated to Stratford, remaining there until transferred to Wath (in September 1967), then Tinsley (in November 1967), followed by Thornaby in May 1970. Renumbered to 37003 under TOPs in 1973, its next allocation was to Gateshead (September 1979) then Thornaby (January 1982), back to Gateshead (October 1982), and onto Tinsley (again) in July 1987.

On the 2nd October 1989 37003 was unofficial named 'Tiger Moth' (painted red nameplates towards the No 1 end) before joining fellow old timers 37001 (D6701, then numbered 37707) and 37002 (D6702, then numbered 37351) at Immingham in January 1990. Then, in June 1992, during an overhaul at Doncaster, it was given the Civil Engineers 'Dutch' livery (and lost the 'Tiger Moth' nameplates) as seen above. However, it still retained its original riveted bracing around the roof-line grills that was a feature of the first five locomotives built at the Vulcan Foundry.

By September 1994 it was stored at Immingham until moved to Bescot in February 1998, then onto Crewe Works where its engine was removed prior to purchase by The Class 37 Locomotive Group. In August 1998 it was moved by road to the East Anglian Railway Museum near Colchester and began its preservation era. The power unit from 37073 was fitted in April 2002 and 37003 ran again (now sporting a fresh coat of BR Blue) on the Wensleydale Railway in 2004. By August 2006 it became based at the Weardale Railway in County Durham then, in December 2007, it was moved to Shildon (NRM) Locomotion Museum until arriving at its current home on the Mid Norfolk Railway in February 2009.

37003 was temporarily renumbered 37360 for the Mid Norfolk 50th Anniversary Gala in September 2010, and again acquired the 'Dutch' livery, but was renumbered back to 37003 in September 2011. Now sporting BR Blue once more, it was delivered to UKRL, Leicester (by road and rail) for overhaul in August 2017. Following the "discovery of cracks within the main crank of the engine cast" this overhaul is still ongoing in 2020.
