Caledonian Extension tour - 5

LCGB NW regularly arranged railtours to Glasgow with optional “extension” mini tours to some interesting routes before returning south in the evening. On 6th March 1982 this arrived in Glasgow Central behind 85023 where 20039 + 20152 backed on for a tour of Ayrshire.

The tour reversed at Mauchline Jct but 20152 was struggling and we stopped alongside Ayr depot to swap it for 20089 although it was pointing the “wrong way”.

From Ardrossan we headed to the then 3 year old Hunterston Terminal where the participants could climb down and stretch their legs.

Built to replace General Terminus Quay in Glasgow for the import of Iron Ore and Coal for Ravenscraig Steelworks, the latter’s demise led to re-use importing coal for Longannet Power Station before the complex closed and the facilities have now been demolished.
