Dumped at Distington
Yorkshire Engine Co 0-6-0 DE 2603 of 1955 is seen dumped out of use at Distington Foundry, Workington in June 1980. This foundry produced ingot moulds for use at Workington and other steelworks, but was closed less than a year after this photo was taken.
Steel rails were produced at Workington since 1877, although steelmaking here ceased in 1974 and ingots then brought in from Teeside were remelted and rolled until final closure in 2006.
This was one of the best Industrial Railway visits we made, writing in advance for permission and getting a guided tour of the site. Sadly I only had an Instamatic to capture these scenes on what is now the inevitable industrial / retail park.
