The Rich and the Poor
This is an entry into the Brickscalibur Rich and Poor category.
It too had been a confusing night for the young prince of the land. He had slipped out of his fancy room to take a calming night walk, but on his return back to the castle the guards had blocked his entrance, even as he pleaded that he was, in fact, the real prince. But they told him the real prince had been brought in an hour earlier. And so, defeated, the real prince walked away from the castle, his head slumped with sadness. He made his way down the dirty streets of the city, hoping to find a place with warmth and a place to sleep. Finally he found what he was looking for; a few commoner folk sat around a fire telling tales of joyous days and wondrous battles of old. He joined them assuming they would kick him out; but he at least wanted to try. But no! They welcomed him and invited him to tell stories with them too. After a wonderful night filled with laughter and happiness, the prince decided he would try again to gain entry into the castle. This time, to his surprise they let him in mumbling something about a fake prince that had spent the night and ran away. As the young prince walked the halls of the castle, walking past his father’s throne. He thought about how someday, that would be his throne. And, remembering his laughter-filled night, he decided that when he was king, the whole world would be happy not just a few.
It had been a confusing night for the young commoner. One minute he had been trying to beg the guards outside of the castle for food or money. The next minute they had confused him with the prince of the region and were ushering him inside of the castle. He had spent a night in a comfortable bed not arguing with the guards because he badly wanted to experience the life of a nobleman. At first he enjoyed the luxuries of being rich. He got a comfortable bed, nice clothes (Though they looked so hot and stuffy he refused them), and many servants to wait on him and deliver him warm delicious food. That was until the king who believed him to be his son, had made him join a royal council meeting with all the lords of the region. He went to the council meeting eagerly expecting to meet many kind lords and ladies. But the council was nothing like he expected. Nobody was kind and welcoming, the closest thing to kindness were the fake smiles plastered on the faces of the noblemen and women. But after the first five minutes every noble was frowning, two of the nobles even erupted into a shouting match. That is when the young commoner learned the truth, nobles were not happy because they had money and power; in fact it was the opposite. Because they had so much power, they would always want more. Perhaps they were rich with money, but they were not rich with happiness. The young commoner slipped away, deciding this life was not for him.
