Symphyotrichum novae-angliae, formerly grouped in the aster genus as Aster novae-angliae, is a native to Central and (North-)Eastern North America. There are isolated populations in other parts of North America, such as in New Mexico and in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Additionally, it has been introduced and now lives as a neophyte in many parts of the world. It tends to grow in open, moist habitats, including meadows and prairies, marshes and fens, forest edges, as well as agricultural or construction sites.
