UK022009 Limelight Mk VII -11
Lime light Mk VII adopted in 1900, this example manufactured by Siemens in 1901. The external shutter assembly is missing. Very similar to the Mk VI adopted in 1896. The only difference is the pitch of the screw thread of the lens assembly.
Like all lime lights, the tank below the lamp is for alcohol spirit, the fitting on the front of the tank is where a rubber hose delivering gaseous oxygen is attached.
The oxygen and ethanol burn against a stick of quicklime (calcium oxide) which glows brilliantly giving a spotlight visible by naked eye for over 20 miles at night.
