Rc Rover

The inspiration for this build was the wide bike tyres from the Harley Davidson set. I thought the wider tyre had potential for a hub less wheel design. After a few prototypes I managed to get a design that worked reasonably well. The drive motors had to be geared down heavily to provide enough torque to turn the wheels. Where the tyres are only held in by friction there is still quite a lot of slip from the drive wheel turning the larger tyre. I did play around with a design with one small wheel inside the larger tyre and another small wheel on top pinching the larger tyre. Unfortunately getting both of those to drive the tyre just ended up being way too bulky so I settled for just one drive wheel. It was definitely a fun challenge trying to find a balance between having enough torque and trying to minimise the amount of slip from the drive wheel turning the tyre.

 

This model is powered by 2 powered up XL motors for drive and one powered up L motor for steering.

 

This build was originally planned for #febrovery and was very close to being finished but unfortunately I had to put it to the side for a little while. Only 7 months later I managed to get round to finishing it.
