Sundhnúksgígar

Last day of the Sundhnúksgígar volcano eruption 🌋

Sundhnúksgígar is a row of craters on the outskirts of Grindavik, a town on the Reykjanes Peninsula, which erupted in December 2023 and again in February 2024. The previous eruptions of this volcano occurred over 2,500 years ago.

The Sundhnúksgígar crater became the site of the second volcanic eruption in Iceland in 2023, which took place between December 18 and 21. This eruption was also referred to as the Grindavik eruption due to its proximity to the town and the significant impact it had on local infrastructure.

On February 8, Sundhnúksgígar erupted again, with the eruption ending after two days. This marked the sixth eruption in the area over the past four years, following the Litli-Hrutur eruption in the summer of 2023 and the Fagradalsfjall eruptions in 2021 and 2022. Following the 2023 Sundhnúksgígar eruption, a volcanic fissure opened near Hagafell Mountain in January 2024.

These recent eruptions have not only reshaped the local landscape but have also provided valuable data for volcanic research and monitoring. The frequent volcanic activity in this region highlights the dynamic nature of Iceland’s geology and the ongoing need for preparedness and resilience in the face of natural events.
