Russians in California
80 years after Russian ship Saint Gabriel reached Alaska’s coast was established Fort Ross, the first Russian settlement in California. It was founded in 1812 by the order of the most famous colonial gubernator in Russian America Alexandre Baranov 80 km North from modern San Francisco. Ross was the southernmost Russian colony in North America and was founded as an agricultural settlement intended to supply Alaska’s colonies with food. In the early years, the colonial government also paid attention to the development of the fur trade, but agriculture and small-scale industry became the basis of its economy.
