Biol4394: Refilling the Lakes and Streams
Picture, taken March 25, 2020 shows a little pond that serves a big purpose. This is the Delafield Fish Hatchery in Delafield, WI. This hatchery has been around wisconsin since the beginning of the 1900s. Its function is and was to give Bass and Walleye (Sander vitreus) a space to lay eggs and reproduce more offspring. More specifically Largemouth Bass (Micropterus salmoides) are hatched here. The hatchery allows for local lakes and streams to be replenished with more of these fish. Allowing for a constant stability within the lakes ecosystem as many of the Bass and Walleye fall to being prey to other aquatic animals. Who seek out and eat the Bass and Walleye eggs as a source of food. Where a decrease in population of either species would dramatically affect its ecosystem without the presence of both fish in the lakes/streams.
