On a radioactive note... [Explore 21.03.2024]
Rosé Quartett - Oil painting by Viennese expressionist painter Max Oppenheimer (1885-1954). Recently displayed in Vienna's Leopold Museum, on loan from the City of Nürnberg.
Arnold Rosé (1863-1946), first violinist and founding member of the quartet, was from 1881 until 1938 a legendary concertmaster of the Vienna Court Opera (after WWI the Vienna State Opera) and of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.
Oppenheimer was himself an accomplished violinist, and it was his intention not only to depict the performing musicians and their personalities accurately but to project the atmosphere and intensity of their music-making. To this end he had them rehearse late Beethoven quartets at the sittings!
On recent visits to museums and galleries I've been trying out 35mm f:2 lenses - namely the Super Takumar 35mm f:2 Model I (the heavy one), the Super-Multi-Coated version of the Model II, and the HD Pentax FA 35mm f:2 AL.
My impression is that the Model II is not quite up to the standard of the Model I, which was no doubt a very ambitious and expensive piece of glass. Here the horizontal lines of the frame have slight barrel-distortion. If I correct it, the verticals become slightly distorted, so I've left it. There's also some CA on the edges of the frame.
