WW Vienna, Karl Marx Hof [EXPLORE 2021-04-14]

Square windows are a feature of the Karl Marx Hof, as they are of many other communal housing projects in Vienna of the 1920s. Here we see two solutions for dividing them into panes: the simple "four-square" version and the more complex division of three across, four up, giving twelve panes of glass. Note the matching panes in the doors.

The Karl Marx Hof, under construction from 1926 until 1930, is one of Vienna's largest housing projects and upon completion gave home to 5000 people in 1400 apartments. It spans a length of one and half kilometres and is said to be the longest single building in the world.

Vienna's community housing is a success story to this day and one of the great achievements of Vienna's long-standing Social Democratic City Council. The City is active in renovation and maintenance and continues to this day to plan and build for the future.
