Intel Broadwell-EP Single Core Die Shot (QK3J)
I could not find any good photos of a broadwell core online so I decided to fix that. Note that this is from an engineering sample (QK3J, stepping R0).
Unlike most CPU die shots where I use a 5X objective, since I was only doing a single core I was able to use a 10X objective. To compensate for the reduction in light, I had to get two LED floodlights and use a 5 second exposure. I also had to increase the exposure in GIMP.
Opening this up was relatively easy and I followed the usual proceedure until I hit the final 2 layers. These layers were very tough and I was going through too many razors, so I used a pencil eraser to soften them up before going back to the razor to finish up.
Not sure if it matters, but in this photo: flic.kr/p/2oLNaLo in the cloumn of cores on the left, this is the 4th one down from the top.
