Project 4 | Intro
For this project I'm thinking, again, about the effects of this current pandemic.
Before this time of social distancing and shelter-in-place mandates, one of my favorite things to do was have people over to my husband and I's apartment. I love to cook, so having people over was an opportunity to make a meal and serve friends and family. I love gathering around a table to laugh, eat, and converse. I am deeply missing those times of face-to-face community; when we could fill our small one-bedroom apartment with too many people.
I will use red cloth napkins, embroidered on one (5x5in) corner with flowers, to talk about this loss, however temporary it may be.
I use these napkins (18x18in) at mealtime when we have people over. For this work, they will act as symbols for the people I miss being with, the people I miss welcoming into our home, and the times we share together over food.
One of those people I am missing is my grandmother, who is doing well and staying safe, but who I have not seen since all of this started. It is this time of spring (always around Easter) when my whole family would normally go to her and my grandpa's Kansas homestead. Often times, my grandmother and I gather spring flowers together during those visits; from my grandpa's garden or the wildflowers in their fields. It is these memories that inspired me to embroider the flower imagery onto the napkins.
The embroidery technique is my attempt to teach myself a new skill during this time, while also acting as another tribute to my grandmother who is magic with any sort of needlework. Embroidery is also a very methodical and tedious practice- which I love.
