At 1960 m above sea level, Avers is the highest political municipality in Switzerland. At 2126 m, the hamlet of Juf, which belongs to Avers, is the highest settlement in Europe that is inhabited all year round. The entire upper valley from Cresta onwards lies above the tree line.
