Harmonist Cemetery Gate, Harmony PA. Please see description:
If you look closely, you will see an iron pin in the center (top and bottom) of the solid stone door. The door weighs several tons, but is engineered so perfectly that a simple push I’m either side will cause the door to pivot in the center to open. My eight year old grandson can do it.
The Harmonists were a religious sect who settled here from 1805-1815. The wall and door were built in the 1860s. This group believed that a headstone was vanity, and the cemetery has only one, but even it is questionable. Eventually the Harmonists moved on a few times, and at some point decided procreation was sinful and took a vow of celibacy. That’s why you don’t know any Harmonists.
